Is pottery your thing? Or is it painting, drawing, sculpting, weaving, or even photography? HMA offers summer art programs from a wide variety of art mediums and themes for ages 4-17.

 
 

Animal Planet
Ages 4-6 & 7-11
Explore the wild! Campers will create lions, birds, sea creatures, and even pets using paint, recycled materials, and clay. From the jungle to the sky, we’ll bring animals to life in both two- and three-dimensional art.

Around the World in 5 Days
Ages 4-6 & 7-11
Travel the world through art! Each day, campers will explore artistic techniques from different cultures, from Germany to Japan to Africa and beyond.

Books & Scribes
Ages 9-12
Learn bookbinding and bookmaking techniques like explosion books and simple stitch books. Campers will also explore collage, poetry, drawing, and more within their handmade books. (Additional $15 materials fee.)

Botanical Bliss
Ages 9-12
A hands-on nature-inspired camp! Campers will create a pinch pot for a flower they’ll grow from a seed while learning about different plants and their uses. They’ll also paint and draw botanical forms. (Additional $15 materials fee.)

Catawba Nation Celebration
Ages 4-7 & 8-12
Led by Kassidy Plyler of the Catawba Nation, this camp offers a unique cultural experience. Campers will create traditional crafts like corn husk dolls and woven art, connecting with the rich heritage of the Catawba people. Complementing our Catawba Nation exhibition, this is an experience not to miss! (Additional $25 materials fee.)

Curiosity Collective
Ages 4-6, 6-10, & 10-13
Experiment with a variety of art materials! Campers will paint, work with clay, create 3D sculptures, explore printmaking, and more. A perfect camp for those who love to try everything! (Additional $15 materials fee)

Explore American Art & Artists
Ages 4-6, 7-11, & 12+
Celebrate American art! Each day, campers will explore a different American artist and artistic style.

Fiber Arts
Ages 7-10 & 9-13
Discover the art of textiles! Campers will create small weavings, fabric bowls, batik designs, and more. Let your creativity shine with fibers and fabrics!

Fiesta! (Hispanic & Latino Art)
Ages 6-9 & 7-10
Explore the vibrant art of Hispanic and Latino cultures! Campers will learn about artists from Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Spain, and beyond while creating colorful, expressive works of art.

Foundations of Art
Ages 6-9, 7-10, & 11-13
Discover the building blocks of art! Campers will explore the Elements of Art and Principles of Design through hands-on projects, including mixing and naming their own colors. (Additional $15 materials fee.)

Give Me Some Space
Ages 4-6 & 6-9
Blast off into creativity! Campers will create aliens, rocket ships, and galactic landscapes while learning about astronaut-turned-artist Alan Bean.

Indigenous Art
Ages 7-10 & 10+
Dive into the rich artistic traditions of Indigenous cultures! Campers will explore Indigenous artists, cultural storytelling, and the significance of objects in tradition. (Additional $25 materials fee.)

Mask Making
Ages 9-12
Discover the history and meaning of masks from different cultures. Campers will create unique, wearable masks using paper mâché, clay, and other materials. (Additional $15 materials fee.)

Major Masters
Ages 6-9, 7-10, & 11-13
Paint like the masters! Campers will create works inspired by Van Gogh, Picasso, Matisse, and Georgia O’Keeffe, culminating in a final masterpiece on canvas.

Mini Masters
Ages 4-6
A smaller-scale version of Major Masters, tailored for younger artists! Campers will explore the styles of Van Gogh, Picasso, Matisse, and O’Keeffe, creating their own mini masterpieces.

Painting
Ages 6-9
Learn the fundamentals of painting, from brush techniques to color mixing! Campers will explore different painting styles and materials in this fun, hands-on camp.

Pop Art
Ages 4-6 & 7-10
Explore the bold world of Pop Art! Campers will learn about artists like Andy Warhol, Yayoi Kusama, and Roy Lichtenstein while creating colorful, eye-catching artwork.

Printmaking Party
Ages 6-10
Experiment with a variety of printmaking techniques! Campers will create gelli prints, pop art posters, monoprints, and even carve their own stamps for trading cards.

Puppets & Play
Ages 7-12
Campers will design their own puppets, create simple props and scenery, and put on a performance at the end of the week!

Shape & Sculpt
Ages 4-6, 6-9, & 10-13

Create 3D masterpieces! Campers will work with clay, wood, foil, wire, and other materials to craft unique sculptures. (Additional $15 materials fee)

Tiny Art
Ages 6-10

Create itty-bitty masterpieces! Campers will explore drawing, painting, sculpture, and more, contributing a piece to our Free Little Art Gallery on the SALT Block.

Under the Sea
Ages 4-6

Dive into ocean-inspired art! Campers will paint sea creatures, create a seashell mobile, and design beautiful beach scenes.

Watercolor Blast
Ages 7-10

Join watercolor artist Krista Skelton for a creative journey into watercolor painting. Campers will explore techniques, color mixing, and expressive painting styles.

Zentangle
Ages 6-10 & 11-13

Relax and create through Zentangle! This meditative art form teaches simple, repetitive patterns to enhance creativity and focus.

 
 

3D
Explore sculpture using clay, wire, paper mâché, and wood. All projects will be three-dimensional!

Botanical Bliss
A teen version of our popular camp, focusing on plants, painting, drawing, and growing a flower from a seed. (Additional $15 materials fee)

Drawing & Painting
Develop your skills in drawing and painting! Learn perspective, composition, and acrylic painting techniques while working on landscapes and still lifes. (Additional $15 materials fee)

Fiber Arts Workshop
Experiment with natural dyeing, weaving, batik, and other fiber-based art projects.

Collage Garage
Get creative with mixed media! Experiment with layering paper, fabric, and found materials to design unique collages. Learn composition techniques and explore different textures in this hands-on workshop.

Printmaking
Learn to print in a variety of ways. Try gelli prints, make pop art poster prints, print on HMA’s large press to make a monoprint. Carve your own stamp for creating trading cards. A variety of printmaking techniques will be covered.

HMA Members*: $60 per week/per camp | Non-Members: $100 per week/per camp

*NOTE: To receive member discounts, your annual family membership must remain current through the time that your child will participate in art camp. If your membership expires and you do not renew, you will be charged non-member rates for the remaining weeks of camp.

  2. Complete the online registration form and indicate your preferred payment method. If you chose not to pay online, you may download the registration form to mail your payment to:

  3. If you choose online registration, you will receive an invoice via email from kstarnes@hickoryart.org. Once the invoice is processed during our standard business hours, you will receive a confirmation email for your records.

Supervised lunch and recreation will be available from 12-1 PM for an additional $25 per week. Campers should bring their own brown bag lunch to enjoy as a group. Early Drop-Off is available through Catawba Science Center (CSC). Please call CSC at (828) 322-8169 for more information.

summer camp cancellation policy

Call 828-327-8576 with cancellations. A full refund (minus a $10 handling fee) will be given up to four weeks before the session. A 50% refund will be given two weeks before the session. NOTE: Refinds will NOT be given less than two weeks before the start of camp. HMA reserves the right to cancel any camp that does not meet the required participant minimum.
