Call to Artists: Juneteenth Art Contest

In celebration and collaboration with our Juneteenth Opening Night event on May 30, 2024, Hickory Museum of Art is holding an art contest in collaboration with the Juneteenth Collaborative of Catawba County. Artists are encouraged to delve into the themes of liberation, heritage, and the journey towards equality. Artworks may explore historical events, personal narratives, cultural traditions, or visions for a more inclusive future. Let your imagination soar as you pay homage to the resilience and triumphs of African Americans throughout history. Join us in honoring Juneteenth through the power of art, as we celebrate freedom and unity for all.

About Juneteenth

Juneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”) marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to proclaim that all enslaved people were free. The troops’ arrival came a full two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth is our country’s second independence day and honors the end of slavery in the United States. On June 17, 2021, it officially became a federal holiday.

Catawba County agencies and organizations will commemorate Juneteenth with celebrations, performances, parades, guest speakers, revival, resource fairs, informative programming, and family gatherings. It is a time for reflection and rejoicing. It is a time for empowerment and excellence. It is a time for community and togetherness. Please join in the celebration by participating in the events listed below.
